Analytical Exposition Text

Hello! In this post, I will publish the exposition I made for the test on Wednesday, October 10. It's about how school uniforms are really important especially for us in Indonesia. I hope you like it, and hopefully it can give some positive informations from it. Enjoy it, just like I enjoyed making this text!

Are School Uniforms Really Necessary in Indonesia?

                Indonesia, one of the most populous country in the world. In a country very populated like it, you might think it will be hard to recognize people’s occupations because of all the diversities the people have between them. But, actually, it’s pretty easy to recognize who are students that go to school, because they all wear similar – if not same – school uniforms. You can also identify which stage of education they are sitting at right now because each stages of education has a different uniform. It also serves other purposes, such as a sign of discipline, a sign of unity, as a way to introduce professionalism, and as an identity for the school itself.

                White-red for elementary grade students, white-blue for junior high school students, and white-gray for senior high school students. They all serve a purpose. Not everyone in Indonesia can afford school at the ideal age so you often see people of different ages go to the same stage of education. This way, old or young, we are able to know or identify what stage of education the person is having right now by identifying their uniforms.

                School uniforms are also a sign of discipline. Usually, school uniforms are not only about the shirts and the trousers. There’s also much more! It also includes belts, hats, socks, badges, even the smallest detail in the uniform such as nametags and the OSIS logo. Students who are discipline are more likely to dress completely and neatly according to the school’s rules, whereas students who aren’t are more likely to dress much more freely, not caring about the school’s rules.

                People come from different backgrounds in Indonesia, due to it being a big country spread across islands. They have different races, ethnic groups, religions, and customs. But, in schools, they are the same. They are students who study. School uniforms are a way to create a sense of unity in all of the diversities that people have. This will decrease the amount of conflicts greatly because most of the conflicts in Indonesia happen because of the diversities that people have (especially for teenagers!)

                School uniforms are also used to introduce professionalism for the students. A lot of job instances in Indonesia require them to use uniforms when they go to work. School uniforms create the habit for people so they don’t need to put much effort into adapting once they start working.

                Additionally, school uniforms are also a part of a school’s identity! Often, each school has a signature “batik” uniform which they use for big, major festivals or when the students participate in a competition with other schools. This is particularly helpful in such competitions because we can easily distinguish students from other schools.

                School is full of memories too, especially for the people who has finished it and now are working. People often store their old school uniforms in their wardrobes. By seeing it, people might remember the nostalgia they had before back when they had to use the school uniform almost every day. Nostalgias about old friends and their own stories about their experiences in school.

                So, school uniforms are really a necessity in Indonesia. It is required in order to create the unity amongst students in the realm of diversity. Having to wear school uniforms also builds 2 strong characters needed by the students in their later life: discipline and professionalism.
